Americas new boy toy David Beckham is out for 4-6 weeks with an injury! Stop the presses!
Oh wait.. I forgot no one in America cares about soccer or David Beckham. What team does he play for again? The truth of the matter is that Becks is just another over paid athlete in this country. He’s not a God here, like he was in Europe. He came here to ’save’ American soccer, and in my opinion is doing a piss poor job at it.
ESPN aired his first game and covered his first goal in America. But now that he’s out for 6 weeks and practically done for the year, we won’t be hearing much more of him for a long time. Pele tried it… and what happened to him? We ran him right out of town and back to Brazil.
The same thing will happen to Beckham. He’ll have a billion dollars, but still be a nobody in the minds of American sports fans.
Maybe he should tryout to be the kicker on an NFL team. Now that would be entertaining!
It’s been 8 months since the Gators manhandled the Buckeyes in the BCS Championship game. We’ve gone through an entire recruiting season, NFL Draft, and summer practices. It’s late August and September is just around the corner. This can only mean one thing. College football is back!
There are 4 College football games on tonight, including the primetime matchup #2 LSU vs unranked Mississippi State. What a great game to kick off the season. We could see 50-60 points scored tonight. If LSU doesn’t win by 40, then something’s wrong. The game will air on ESPN tonight at 8:00 EST.
There are so many things that make college football great. The tradition, the school spirit, and the 100,000 seat stadiums are just a few. Coeds and student sections, tailgating and more. It’s just a great time of the year. Students and alumni put aside their generational differences and come together for a 3 hour gridiron bash. It’s euphoric in a way. Sitting in front of the TV with a cold one, is only second to being the stadium yourself.
It’s been 8 long months, but tonight… college football is back.

So the Moose is struggling a bit this year. He’s 8-10 with a 5.53 ERA and only 73 strikeouts. Not an exact replica of 1992 is it? A slight drop off with age is expected, but to yank (no pun intended) one of your workhorses this late in the season for some minor league call-up is not a smart move.
The Yankees have the playoffs on the line. Do you really want the ball in the hands of Ian Kennedy instead of a guy with nearly 250 career wins and a couple rings on his finger? Apparently Joe Torre does. And this may just be another reason why Yankees fans want Torre gone.
“He was disappointed, naturally. This was very difficult for me,” manager Joe Torre said. “We have relied on him every year since he’s been here.” No shit… he was just replaced by a rook who began this season in single A. My advice to Mussina is to get very pissed off. Trash the dugout. Takl to the media. Do whatever he can to get that steam pot ready to burst. Head out on his next start and light it up for 8 innings and 0 runs allowed.
With college football only a day away, Kirk Herbstreit felt inclined to grace us with his annual Herbie Awards. Herbie is notorious for his Buckeye homerism, but surprisingly they only made a few appearances on his lists. You can view all the Herbie Award winners in his ESPN article here.
After you get past all the football talk…ya we know McFadden is the #1 running back, we know who the best receivers are and who the best coaches are. If you scroll down far enough, you will find an interesting section called ‘Prettiest Coeds’. I haven’t seen this much SEC domination since last years bowl games. 8 of the 10 schools listed on Herbies Prettiest Coeds list are SEC schools. No surprise here that Georgia is number 1.
I received a tip first hand that the reason FSU was knocked down to number 7 is because the last time Herbie was there, he couldn’t get a girl to go home with him. The daughter of a tipster was being courted by Kirk, and rejected his passes all night long. This was enough to move them down the list. And by the way, someone needs to remind Kirk that he’s married.
Another note on the Herbie Awards … there’s no way some Big Ten school can top the list of best Gameday Locations. Mark up another win for the SEC in my book… because you just can’t beat football in the south.
New England Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel is ending his holdout to sign the 1 year franchise tender. Really? You mean a player decided to end his holdout? What player has ever actually held out for the regular season. No One!
No player is going to miss those checks when the regular season starts. So what did Samuel actually accomplish my sitting out training camp and almost the entire preseason? The Pats may have stipulated that they won’t use the franchise tag on him again next year. That’s about it (if they did indeed agree to that). He is set to make $7.79 million this season.
It’s obvious that all players want a long term deal. Injuries happen every game. If a player suffers a career ending while on a 1 year contract, they’re basically screwed forever. However, if he has a 6 year deal, then he can still collect paychecks unless he retires. That’s the whole point behind these holdouts. But a team like the Patriots, will pretty much tell a player to shut up and sign somewhere else. They don’t respond to holdouts well.
Our guess is Samuel is on the Raiders in 2008.

The U.S. Open is just around the corner. Could this finally be the year when someone other then Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal wins a Grand Slam? Probably not…but there is always hope.
Ahhh, who am I kidding? Federer is my favorite tennis player since Pete retired. No one has dominated the game of tennis like Roger. If he can crush Nadal in a French Open, then it will be the consensus that Federer is the greatest tennis player to ever play the game. The man is going to end up with 20 Grand Slams by the time he’s finished.
Just take a look here at the last 10 Grand Slam competitions:

Notice a recurring theme?
Roger is simply the man. If he was from the USA, he would be larger then life. I’m talking like Lebron James style. The guy would be on every commercial and billboard in the country. He’d be like Andy Roddick circa 2002 except actually good.
We used to just say Bettis is big and fat, but now we can say he is a big fat liar. In Bettis’ new book “The Bus. My Life in and out of a Helmet,” he is quoted as saying “I wasn’t faking that I had an injury. I was just faking that the injury happened on that short-yardage play. I had to fool the coaches and the team’s medical department into thinking the injury had occurred on that play. Otherwise, the Steelers would have had their reason to cut me and my salary.”
I hope no kids decide to pick up his book. What a great example for the thousands of young football players coming up through the ranks. Bettis is basically telling them it’s ok to fake injuries for personal benefit.
And poor Richard Huntley. The guy got screwed out of a starting job on the Pittsburgh Steelers because Jerome Bettis lied. Don’t be surprised if he publicly lashes out on Bettis in the next few days. What a dick thing of Bettis to do.
After last night’s 30-3 Rangers beat down on the Orioles, Bud should consider implementing the Little League 10 run rule. Really, do teams not sure mercy anymore in sports? Do managers not replace starters when their teams are winning by 10 runs, let alone 20 or even 30!
“This is something freaky. You won’t see anything like this again for a long, long time. I am glad I was on this end of it,” said Marlon Byrd, who hit one of two Texas grand slams.
And the thing is, the Rangers went scoreless in the first 3 innings. So it’s not like they were mashing all game. They scored 30 runs on 29 hits in only 6 innings. What does that say for Baltimore’s relief pitching problem? The Baltimore Ravens who play across the street haven’t given up 30 points in 2 years!
