The BCS Gods have spoken. LSU’s victory over Tennessee to win the SEC convinced enough voters to jump them several spots into the #2 place in the BCS standings. LSU will take on #1 Ohio State January 7 in New Orleans. LSU will be the first 2 loss team to ever play for a BCS title.
This is the second year in a row now that OSU will be fighting for a National Championship and this is the second year in a row that they will have had 51 days rest between games. Will OSU make up excuses again if they end up losing, or will they learn from last year’s mistakes and use the time off wisely?
I personally think LSU is going to whipe the floor with OSU, just like Florida did last year. The SEC is just far too superior. The Big 10 can’t hang with their speed or size. This also might be one of the very few times when the #2 team is favored to win over the #1 team.
I’m disgusted with the way the NCAA handles coaching interviews in college and football. There shouldn’t be any coaching discussions during the regular season. ESPN is reporting that “LSU athletic director Skip Bertman confirmed Wednesday night through spokesman Herb Vincent that his Michigan counterpart, Bill Martin, has officially requested permission to speak with Les Miles about becoming the next coach of the Wolverines. Bertman requested that the meeting not take place until after LSU plays Tennessee Saturday for the SEC championship. Martin told Bertman he will comply.”
Doesn’t Michigan know that LSU has a SEC Title game to play on Saturday. Can’t they wait 4 more days before they start calling Les Miles and creating distractions for the LSU team? It’s not fair to the players who committed to Miles and gave it their all this season. They deserver a chance to be an SEC Champion.
Les Miles could probably give two shits about what LSU does this weekend. He’ll be coaching Michigan next year. If Miles does leave LSU to coach the Wolverines, he must pay LSU $1.25 million. But big deal, the UM will probably reimburse him for those losses.
I don’t blame Miles for wanting to leave LSU. It’s every coaches dream of coaching for their alma mater. Just freaking wait until your done with the current season before you go making arrangements to fly to Ann Arbor.
We all somewhat expected Carr to retire after this season, and following Ohio State’s recent Michigan beatdown out expectations were confirmed. Michigan legend Llyod Carr will retire. It’s a good thing he chose to retire, because Michigan might have fired his ass anyways.
From ESPN.com
The Jim Tressel-led Buckeyes beat the Wolverines 14-3, Saturday, dropping Carr to 6-7 overall in the matchup that matters most.
“Lloyd Carr is one of the true gentlemen of college football,” Tressel said Sunday. “His legacy is extraordinary and his leadership in the coaching profession is greatly appreciated. He made a difference in collegiate athletics.”
Carr led the Wolverines to the 1997 national championship. He won 77.9 percent of his conference games, trailing the success rate of just two coaches that were in the Big Ten for at least a decade: Michigan’s Bo Schembechler and Fielding Yost. Against top-10 teams, Carr was 17-9.
And that 6-7 overall record against Ohio State is a bit skewed. He’s like 1-6 in their last 7 meetings. Sure Carr has a great ‘body of work’, but really he just wasn’t getting the job done as of late. They got beat by a DII school earlier this year and ended this season with two straight losses. Not quite what I call leaving on a high note.
Michigan will likely target current LSU head coach Les Miles to replace Carr.
There’s a new ‘most amazing play’ in college football history. Sure this isn’t a classic DI rivalry game, and nor doe it feature a band running on the field before the game ends, but this single play in the Trinity vs. Millsaps game might top that all. The game winning play features 15 laterals on route to a touchdown. You can see Millsaps players just giving up as the play goes on. Check it out.
ESPN is reporting that “A sports marketer will give NCAA investigators financial records and other evidence linking Reggie Bush and his family to nearly $280,000 in benefits while he was enrolled at Southern California, according to a report Wednesday.”
Say goodbye to your beloved Heisman!
Bush has denied time and time again that he nor his family ever accepted money while he was in college. Sure Reggie, we believe you as you give us that speech 2 years ago from your parents $750,000 house as you drive away in your H2 Hummer. Does this report really shock anyone though. Just take 1 step on to a major college campus and look at the cars players drive and the diamond studs in their ears. It’s a joke.
If convicted, Bush will lose his Heisman and USC could lose thier national championship. It won’t affect his playing in the NFL or that fat $60 million contract he signed with the Saints, so really Bush could probably care less.
#1 overall draft pick, JaMarcus Russell finally signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders. This was this longest holdout by a rookie I can remember. By the looks of the deal details, it all seems worth it. Negotiated by agents Eric Metz, Ethan Lock and Vance Malinovic, the contract carries a maximum value of $68 million, a league rookie record. There are $31.5 million in guarantees and an additional $3 million in 2010, provided Russell simply reaches minimum playing time benchmarks. In the first four years of the contract, Russell can make $44 million.
Is the NFL screwed up or what? Why in hell do rookie players get to make $10 million a year, while 10 year NFL vets are only making $1 million a year. These rookies haven’t proven shit. Half of them bust anyways and aren’t worth a ham sandwich.
I’d love to take a look at current NFL starting rosters and see how many of them are 1st round picks vs rounds 2-7. I bet there are more 2-7s. A team could save a ton of money by just dumping their first round picks every year and loading up on 2nd and 3rd round talent. Why spend $44 million on a guy that could be a bust. Grab yourself the hot free agent QB instead and save $10 million.
It’s like winning the lottery for these college players. I think the NCAA should pay some of the rookie contracts. This will help solve the “should college athletes be paid” debate and save NFL teams money. Think about it.
No team in college football history has fallen faster then the Michigan Wolverines. They started the season ranked #5 on the AP Poll, and nothing short of winning out the rest of the season will let them even sniff the top 25. Michigan fans were on suicide watch last week after their stunning loss to App. State. Two days ago, they were handed another beating by Oregon State and the Statue of Liberty.
Two years ago, NFL experts criticized Matt Lineart for staying in college when he could have left earlier and been the #1 pick in the NFL Draft. He stayed, and ended up going #10 to Arizona, costing him some $10-20 million dollars. This year, Chad Henne did the same thing. He could have left college after his junior season and been one of the top QBs taken, assuring himself millions of dollars. Henne wanted to come back to bring a championship to Michigan. How’s that turning out for him?
Not a smart move by Henne. He won’t even play in the Wolverine’s first ‘meaningful’ game against Notre Dame this coming Saturday. Apparently Henne was knocked out of the game, but I’m not so sure Carr didn’t bench his ass. Freshman QB Ryan Mallett will get the start against the Fighting Irish.
Put that beach-side mansion and new Porsche on hold. If Henne doesn’t turn things around, he’ll slip faster in the NFL Draft then Brady Quinn.
The biggest college football news from this past weekend has to be the enormous upset of the Appalachian State Mountaineers over the Michigan Wolverines 34-32. It marks the first time in history that a DI-AA team beat a ranked team, let alone the #5 ranked team. This could go down as the greatest upset in college football history. There’s a reason why people say “That’s why you play the game.”
So of the 109,000 people in attendence at the start of the game, I’m wondering how many of them were there till the end. I hope Michigan fans remember that it’s ‘just a game.’ Don’t you want to punch someone in the face anytime you hear the phrase ‘It’s just a game’? The suicide watch was out Saturday night. Cops scoured the roof tops in search of disgruntled and angry Michigan fans. Luckily as of right now there are no suicides reported.
It has to suck to know that you’re season is over after the first week. Michigan could win out and be 10-1 at the end of the season, but that one loss is going to keep them out of the top rankings in a different way than if it was a loss to Ohio State. Michigan needs to accept their new role as ’spoiler.’ Their season is over. Their job now is to ruin other teams seasons much like their was ruined.
